Welcome to Algerian with Mona!
The FIRST website where you can learn how to speak the Algerian dialect.
How It All Started ✨ (My Story)
Salam! I’m Mona, your teacher of Algerian Arabic.
In 2009, I graduated from the University of Bouzareah, in Algiers as an English teacher. The following year, I started teaching in public middle schools, where I taught English for eight years.
But in 2019, I felt the need for a change. I decided to step out of my comfort zone, quit my job, and start freelancing. I joined an online teaching platform with the intention of teaching English or Modern Standard Arabic (MSA).
My first student wanted to learn MSA, and just two weeks later, I got a second student—except this one wanted to learn Algerian Arabic specifically! That caught me off guard. I had always assumed that to learn the Algerian dialect, people first had to master MSA and then immerse themselves in the culture. I had never considered the possibility of teaching Algerian Arabic as a structured course.
But then, during our very first lesson, my student said something that changed everything:
“I couldn’t find resources online to learn Algerian Arabic.”
That statement amazed me. I had never realized there were people actively searching for ways to learn my dialect online. And in that moment, something clicked—“I can do this!”
And that’s how it all started. Thanks to this student and many others (after Allah), I created my website and YouTube channel to help learners like you.
I hope you find my lessons, tips, and videos useful. Just know that every resource is created with love and passion. Whether you’re an Arabic speaker or completely new to the language, my mission is simple: helping you speak like a native. 💛
P.S: I’m not giving private lessons at the moment.
Before you start learning,
what you should know about the Algerian dialect.
The Algerian Arabic dialect originates from Classical Arabic (Fusha). Over the centuries, it has absorbed many words from Spanish, Turkish-Ottoman, and French, reflecting Algeria’s rich history.
Unlike Modern Standard Arabic, Algerian Arabic is primarily a spoken language—we don’t typically write it. It also varies significantly across regions, with differences in intonation, vocabulary, and expressions from one area to another.
In addition to Algerian Arabic, Algeria is home to another distinct linguistic heritage: the Amazigh language, which has its own variations, including Chaoui, Kabyle, Targui, and Mzabite.
Here on this website, I teach a widely understood variety of Algerian Arabic—one that will help you communicate with people across Algeria.
