Possessive Pronouns

Welcome to today’s grammar lesson on possessive pronouns. Possessive pronouns are used a lot in the Algerian Arabic, and mastering them can greatly improve your communicative skills. In this lesson, you will learn what they are and how they are used so you can use them correctly in speaking. So let’s get started!

Possessive Pronouns in Arabic in general are connected to the noun (the thing or person that we possess) . You will not really notice the connection though since Algerian Arabic is only spoken, but keep this in mind, it will help you understand my lessons and examples better.

What are the connected pronouns?

(according to their equivalent pronoun)

أنا = ـِي /ana/ I = /-i:/

اِنْتَ / اِنْتِ = ـكْ /nta,nti/ You (singular) = /-ik/

حْنا = ـنَا

/7na:/ We = /-na:/

اِنْتُم = ـكُمْ /ntom/ You = /-kom/

هُوَ = ـو /howa/ He = /-ou/

هِي = ـهَا /hiya/ She = /-ha:/

هوما = ـهُم /houma/ They = /-hom/

Examples

هَذا كْتَابِي /hada: kta:bi:/ This is my book

هذا كْتابكْ /hada: kta:bik/ This is your book (singular)

هَذا كْتَابنَا /hada: kta:bna:/ This is our book

هَذا كْتَابكُم /hada: kta:bkom/ This is your book

هَذا كْتَابُو /hada: kta:bou/ This is his book

هَذا كْتَابها /hada: kta:bha:/ This is her book

هَذا كْتَابهُم /hada: kta:bhom/ This is their book
