Sounds & Letters

Notes:

  • The sounds [ /p/ ب _ /v/ ف _ /g/ ق ] are mainly used in words of French origin that we use in daily speech.

  • The letters [ ظ _ ض ] are pronounced the same in Algerian Arabic (dialect), but not in Classical Arabic.

  • The sounds [ /dh/ ظ _ /dh/ ض _ /dh/ ذ ] are sometimes pronounced as /d/ in everyday speech, especially in some northern regions of Algeria.

صْبَاحْ لْخِيرْ

/s’ba:7 l’khi:r/

good morning

نْجِي لِدَّارْ

/n’ji: lidda:r/

I come home

شْرِيتْ تِيلِيفِيزْيُو جْدِيدَة

/ch’ri:t ti:li:vi:z’you j’di:da/

I bought a new TV

نْقَارِي الطوُنُوبِيلْ فِ لْقَارَاجْ

/n’ga:ri: etounoubi:l fil ga:ra:j/

I park the car in the garage
