Ahmed is looking for the potential bride
Ahmed is a hardworking young Algerian man who wants to get married and settle down. However, he hasn’t found the right woman to marry yet. One day, he asked his coworker if he knew someone well-mannered and from a good family.
His coworker suggested a woman from his family named Nassima, who had all the qualities Ahmed was looking for in a wife. Ahmed was happy and decided to send his mother to meet her and get to know her.2. Getting to know the potential bride
Ahmed’s mother arranged a meeting with Nassima’s family. She went with her eldest daughter to see the potential bride. After the families met and everything went well, Ahmed also went to see Nassima for the choufa char3iya (religious viewing). He talked to her, and they agreed on how they would live their life together.
3. The Engagement Party
The time for the engagement arrived, and Nassima’s family held a small celebration between the two families. Ahmed entered the celebration and gave her a ring, symbolizing what is known as حط اليد (placing the hand), which means Nassima officially became his fiancée. Everyone learned that Nassima was going to marry Ahmed.
4. Civil Marriage Contract
Ahmed and Nassima gathered all the necessary paperwork for the civil marriage contract.
They went to the municipality to finalize the procedure. Ahmed arrived with two witnesses, while Nassima came with her father, who acted as her guardian (ولي الأمر). The civil marriage contract was completed, and they received the family book (دفتر العائلي), officially marking their union.5. The Religious Ceremony
After they received the family book, Ahmed’s and Nassima’s families agreed on a day for the religious marriage contract or الفاتحة, as it’s commonly called. They brought an imam to Nassima’s house, and men from both families attended the gathering. The imam officiated the marriage between the couple, and Ahmed gave the dowry (الشرط) to Nassima’s father.
The Gifts
(It’s not really considered a step, learn why in the story)
Between Ahmed and Nassima’s engagement and wedding, Ahmed would visit her with his family to bring her المهيبة. These were various presents gifted to the bride on religious occasions, like Mawlid (the Prophet’s birthday), Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha. The gifts symbolized love and respect for the bride, strengthening the bond between the two families and showing care for Nassima during this special period.
6. 7enna (Henna) Party
The time for the wedding finally arrived after Ahmed and Nassima agreed on everything and made all the preparations. The day before the big wedding, Ahmed’s family went to Nassima’s house for the henna ceremony in a small celebration. Ahmed’s mother stepped forward and put 7enna to Nassima’s hand, a traditional gesture symbolizing blessings and joy. She also placed a gold coin (لويزة ذهب) on Nassima’s hand as a gift, all amidst ululations (زغاريد) and traditional 7enna songs.
7. The Wedding
On the day of the wedding, everyone was happy. Ahmed’s family and friends gathered, got into their cars, and formed a wedding convoy (كورتيج) heading to Nassima’s house. When they arrived, Nassima came out “under the arm” of her father, and got into the beautifully decorated car adorned with flowers. They fired celebratory gunshots (البارود) in her honor before heading to the wedding hall. At the hall, the celebration began, with the women joyful and celebrating. Nassima started her tassdira (تصديرة), showcasing traditional Algerian outfits, each representing the richness of Algerian heritage. Finally, she completed her tassdira by wearing the white wedding dress (الروبة البيضا), joining her groom, Ahmed, to mark the culmination of their special day.
That was the story of Ahmed and Nassima's wedding, through which you’ve learned about Algerian wedding traditions. I hope you found it informative and enjoyable.😊
