Traditional Algerian Women Outwear

The traditional Algerian women outwear is a piece of garment that covers all the body of the woman from head to toe. It is slightly different from one region to another in terms of the name, the colour and the shape of it.

It was the only garment that women wore in the past, during the colonial years. Despite the new trends of modest women outwear, it is still worn by many women to this day.

Here are the four famous traditional women outwear in Algeria.

1) El-7ayik الحايك

Worn mostly in the north of Algeria

2) El-M’laya الملاية

Worn mostly in the east of Algeria

3) El-Mel7fa الملحفة

Worn mostly in the centre (towards the south) of Algeria

4) El-Mel7fa of Sahara الملحفة الصحراوية

As the name suggests, it’s worn in the sahara of Algeria
