Algerian Arabic Listening Recommendations
Most students of Algerian Arabic struggle to find a suitable TV show or film to practise their listening skill, mainly because unlike other languages where they can easily find series or shows with subtitles, it’s hard or even impossible to find ones for Algerian Arabic TV shows. For this reason, I did my best and searched for the best suitable listening recommendations (even without subtitles unfortunately) for each student’s level.
Beginner Level
As a beginner, I highly recommend you listen to songs as a start, mainly because you can easily find lyrics for almost all Algerian Arabic songs. I also recommend you listen to rather slow paced songs specifically where you can follow through the lyrics while listening.
My Top Songs Recommendations:
Pre-intermediate Level
If you can catch two to three words while you are listening; or sometimes more, then I would recommend that you listen to Algerian TV ads. Specifically, the ones that are not in the form of songs. I find them suitable for this level because they are short and you can guess the meaning even if you don’t understand every word.
Some Examples of Ads Recommendations: (You can find many more on Algerian TV channels that are not available on YT)
Intermediate to Advanced Level
If you understand fifty percent of what you hear in Algerian Arabic, then you’re definitely an intermediate student. I recommend that you listen to 1-on1 interview shows or Algerian series that are not comedy. Don’t be frustrated if you don’t understand everything or most of what you hear because unfortunately, as I mentioned before, subtitles are not available for Algerian TV shows and series. By keeping listening to these types of shows, you will eventually notice an improvement in your understanding, I promise!
My Recommendations:
Advanced Level
At this level, you understand eighty to ninety percent of what you hear. You just need to challenge yourself more with some difficult shows to watch, like comedy for example.
