Months of The Year in Algerian Arabic

Welcome to today’s vocabulary lesson! In this lesson, you will learn the names of the months in Algerian Arabic, why we name them as such, and how they are divided into school year and summer holidays.

1- Names and Pronunciation of the Months

January /ja:nvi:/ جَانفي

February /fi:vri:/ فيفري

March /ma:rs/ مارس

April /avri:l/ أفريل

May /ma:y/ ماي

June /jwa:n/ جْوان

July /jwi:lya/ جْويلية

August /out/ أُوت

September /sibtember/ سبتمبر

October /octouber/ أكتوبر

November /nouvember/ نوفمبر

December /di:sember/ ديسمبر

2- The Origin of the Names

If you know the French language, you may notice that the French names of months are quite similar to Algerian Arabic ones. Simply because of the French conquest of Algeria in the mid-19th century. They left a big impact on our dialect, among which naming the months.

3- School Year/Summer Holidays

The school year in Algeria starts in September and ends officially in June, when transitional exams (BEM & BAC) take place. For the summer holidays, the official months are July and August.
